Prospective PhD Students
I mentor students in the UTEP EEB PhD Program.
We are not accepting masters students at this time.

A competitive prospective PhD student must have a clear idea of their research interests and motivation for why they want to earn a doctorate. A strong academic record and previous independent research experience is required for admission to the PhD program. Interested students should check out the lab's ongoing research and recent publications for dissertation ideas.
The EEB Program does not list a minimum GPA for admissions, but UTEP requires all students in graduate programs to maintain at least a 3.0 GPA. Therefore, students typically need to demonstrate an equivalent level for undergraduate coursework or be able to clearly demonstrate on their application that they can succeed in a PhD program. In preparing their application, I recommend that students should use a combination of previous coursework and research experiences, research submitted to or published in a peer-reviewed journal, and strong letters of reference to demonstrate their readiness to succeed in a doctoral program. A master's degree is not required for entry into this program but can enhance your application. Publications however are strongly encouraged so please highlight any submitted manuscripts or accepted publications that you have.

Funding for this program and students that do research in my lab is primarily available in the form of departmental teaching assistantships and/or in combination with a research assistantship that is associated with specific grant objectives. Prospective students may also apply to external fellowships, which can provide greater flexibility to develop independent lines of research from my ongoing funded projects.

Interested applicants should reach out to ealarue [at] utep.edu by email with their CV and an idea for the main topic of interest for your dissertation project that fits within my lab's scope.
